Art Magazines for the 21st Century:
Amid Challenge and Perspective
Umetniške revije za 21. stoletje: med izzivi in perspektivami


At least three things have been in crisis since modern times: media, art and criticism. Despite the constant gloomy prophecies of an end, none of this has disappeared, but we are witnessing new initiatives. One of them is art publications. What does it mean in 2023 to create a medium dedicated to contemporary art practice? How important is the platform (print, web, text, podcast) and how does it change depending on the content and the target audience? Are art publications meant to promote and question art, or are they an art form in their own right? Is art too much about PR and not enough about polemics? Are they niche projects by people who hermetically seal themselves off in artistic heights, or are they intended for a wider readership? What are the pitfalls of the former and what of the latter? How important is the local focus in a global world, or rather in a local setting with a global perspective? Manca G. Renko, editor of Cukr magazine, will discuss what and how we read, write, speak, hear and edit with the editors from ETC (Hana Čeferin), Šum (Tjaša Pogačar), Blok (Kathryn Zazenski), Kajet (Petrică Mogoș & Laura Naum) and Artforum (Kate Sutton).


Vsaj tri stvari so, ki so v krizi že od moderne dalje: mediji, umetnost in kritika. Kljub nenehnim črnogledim napovedim konca pa nič od naštetega še ni izginilo, pač pa smo priča vedno novim pobudam. Ena od teh so tudi umetniške publikacije. Kaj leta 2023 pomeni ustvarjati medij, ki se posveča sodobnim umetniškim praksam? Kako pomembna je platforma (tisk, internet, teksti, podcasti) in kako se spreminja glede na različne vsebine in ciljne skupine? So umetniške publikacije namenjene promociji umetnosti, prevpraševanju umetnosti ali so same po sebi umetniška forma? Ali se umetnost preveč ukvarja z odnosi z javnostmi in premalo s polemiko? Gre za nišne projekte ljudi, ki so hermetično zaprti v umetniške višave ali so namenjene najširšemu bralstvu? Kaj so pasti prvega in kaj drugega? Kako pomembni so v globalnem svetu lokalni fokusi oz. v lokalnem okolju globalne perspektive? O tem, kaj in kako beremo, pišemo, govorimo, poslušamo in urejamo, se bo z urednicami revij ETC (Hana Čeferin), Šum (Tjaša Pogačar), Blok (Kathryn Zazenski), Kajet (Petrică Mogoș & Laura Naum) in Artforum (Kate Sutton) pogovarjala Manca G. Renko, urednica revije Cukr.

Kate Sutton is a writer currently based in Zagreb, Croatia, after nearly a decade in Russia, where she helped found the non-profit art space Baibakov Art Projects. Since 2018, she has served as the international editor for Artforum. She previously wrote for magazines including Artforum, Bidoun, Frieze, Ibraaz, and LEAP, while regularly contributing to artforum.com. She has penned catalogue essays for artists including Nilbar Güreş, Aslı Çavuşoğlu, Monica Bonvicini, Dorian Gaudin, Basim Magdy, Stefan Sava and Martin Roth. In 2013, she was recognized with an Art Writers Grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation. In 2016 and 2017, she was responsible for the Talks Program at the Vienna Contemporary, and in 2018, she curated "Nathalie Du Pasquier: Fair Game", at the International Centre for Graphic Arts in Ljubljana. For 2019-2020, she was a resident professor of the WHW Akademija, alongside David Maljković.

Kate Sutton je pisateljica, ki po skoraj desetletju bivanja v Rusiji, kjer je pomagala ustanoviti neprofitni umetniški prostor Baibakov Art Projects, trenutno živi v Zagrebu na Hrvaškem. Od leta 2018 je mednarodna urednica pri reviji Artforum. Pred tem je pisala za revije Artforum, Bidoun, Frieze, Ibraaz in LEAP, redno pa je prispevala tudi za artforum.com. Napisala je kataloške eseje za umetnike, kot so Nilbar Güreş, Aslı Çavuşoğlu, Monica Bonvicini, Dorian Gaudin, Basim Magdy, Stefan Sava in Martin Roth. Leta 2013 je prejela štipendijo Art Writers Grant Fundacije Andyja Warhola. V letih 2016 in 2017 je bila odgovorna za program Talks na Vienna Contemporary, leta 2018 pa je kurirala razstavo "Nathalie Du Pasquier: Fair Game" v Mednarodnem grafičnem likovnem centru v Ljubljani. V letih 2019-2020 je bila poleg Davida Maljkovića rezidenčna profesorica WHW Akademije.

Katie Zazenski: artist, curator, director of Stroboskop Art Space, writer, and co-editor-in-chief of BLOK magazine. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at public and private institutions including the Zachęta National Gallery of Art (PL), the Contemporary Art Center in Vilnius (LT), and Tallinn Art Hall (EE), thematically she focuses on material relations between digital + physical space and horizontal/collective community structures. Her newest project, Shadow Archive, was developed for the exhibition Immerse! as part of the multi-year international research project Beyond Matter (ZKM Karlsruhe). Zazenski received her MFA in Sculpture from the Cranbrook Academy of Art (US) and is a two-time Fulbright Research Fellow to Poland where she currently resides.

Katie Zazenski je umetnica, kuratorka, direktorica Art Space Stroboskop, pisateljica in sourednica revije BLOK. Njeno delo je bilo predstavljeno na razstavah v javnih in zasebnih institucijah, med drugim v Nacionalni galeriji umetnosti Zachęta (PL), Centru sodobne umetnosti v Vilni (LT) in Talin Art Hall (EE), tematsko pa se osredotoča na materialne odnose med digitalnim in fizičnim prostorom ter horizontalnimi/kolektivnimi strukturami skupnosti. Njen najnovejši projekt Shadow Archive je bil razvit za razstavo Immerse! kot del večletnega mednarodnega raziskovalnega projekta Beyond Matter (ZKM Karlsruhe). Zazenski je magistrirala iz kiparstva na Akademiji za umetnost Cranbrook (ZDA) in je dvakratna Fulbrightova raziskovalka na Poljskem, kjer trenutno živi.

Hana Čeferin (1995) holds a Master's degree in Art History. Between 2015 – 2023, she has been a collaborator of Galerija Fotografija in Ljubljana, where she has worked with Slovenian and international artists. Between 2022 – 2023, she worked in the curatorial department of Kunsthalle Wien. Since 2021 she has been the editor of the contemporary art magazine ETC. and the director of the eponymous institution. As an independent curator, she has collaborated with the Cankarjev dom, Škuc Gallery and the National Gallery, among others. She regularly publishes critical and art historical articles in collections and magazines. Between 2020 and 2022, she participated in the School for Curatorial Practice and Critical Writing – World of Art, which is part of SCCA Ljubljana.

Hana Čeferin (1995) je magistra umetnostne zgodovine. Med leti 2015 – 2023 je bila sodelavka Galerije Fotografije v Ljubljani, kjer je sodelovala s slovenskimi in tujimi umetniki. Med 2022 – 2023 je delala v kuratorskem oddelku Kunsthalle Wien na Dunaju. Od leta 2021 je urednica revije za sodobno umetnost ETC. in direktorica istoimenskega zavoda. Kot samostojna kuratorka je doslej sodelovala mdr. z Galerijo Prešernovih nagrajencev Kranj, Cankarjevim domom, Galerijo Škuc in Narodno galerijo. Kritiške in umetnostnozgodovinske prispevke redno objavlja v zbornikih in revijah. Med leti 2020 in 2022 je bila udeleženka šole za kuratorske prakse in kritiško pisanje Svet umetnosti, ki poteka v okviru SCCA Ljubljana.

Petre Mogoș & Laura Naum are the editors of Kajet, a journal that seeks to reconfigure the Eastern European thought, and The Future of, a magazine of extinct ideas. They also run a bookshop in Bucharest, called Dispozitiv Books, which functions as a publishing programme and editorial laboratory.

Petre Mogoș in Laura Naum sta urednici revije Kajet, ki poskuša preoblikovati vzhodnoevropsko misel, in revije The Future of, revije o izumrlih idejah. V Bukarešti vodita tudi knjigarno Dispozitiv Books, ki deluje kot založniški program in uredniški laboratorij.

Tjaša Pogačar is an independent curator of contemporary art and co-founder and editor-in-chief of Šum, a journal and platform for art and theory-fiction. Motivated by desire to inhabit a different reality than the socially, politically and ecologically precarious one that we inherited, her work has been shaped in dialogue with art practices that imagine, prototype and test out new scenarios and narratives for other possible futures. She is a curator of ISKRA DELTA - 34th Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts (2021) and ZONE1, a section for emerging artists from Austria at the viennacontemporary art fair (2022). Since 2020 she is a curator-producer for new media and visual art at Projekt Atol Institute and runs an offsite/online curatorial project Plaza Protocol. In 2023 she curates also with Kunsthalle Bratislava. Occasionally she writes about contemporary art. She published in L’Internationale, e-flux Art&Education, Photograph magazine, Tipping Point and ETC Magazine among others.  In 2020 she was a Tranzit/Erste resident at MuseumsQuartier Vienna, a curator in residence at Futura gallery in Prague and in 2023 a resident with Forum Stadtpark in Graz (Styria AiR). She is based between Ljubljana and Prague.

Tjaša Pogačar je neodvisna kuratorka sodobne umetnosti ter soustanoviteljica in glavna urednica Šuma, revije in platforme za umetnost in teoretsko fikcijo. Njeno delo, ki ga je spodbudila želja po bivanju v drugačni realnosti od družbeno, politično in ekološko negotove, ki smo jo podedovali, se je oblikovalo v dialogu z umetniškimi praksami, ki si predstavljajo, prototipirajo in preizkušajo nove scenarije in pripovedi o drugih možnih prihodnostih. Je kuratorka ISKRA DELTA - 34. grafičnega bienala v Ljubljani (2021) in ZONE1, sekcije za uveljavljajoče se umetnike iz Avstrije na umetnostnem sejmu viennacontemporary (2022). Od leta 2020 je kuratorka-producentka za nove medije in vizualno umetnost na Zavodu Projekt Atol ter vodi offsite/online kuratorski projekt Plaza Protocol. Leta 2023 bo sodelovala tudi s Kunsthalle Bratislava. Občasno piše o sodobni umetnosti, med drugim je objavljala v revijah L'Internationale, e-flux Art&Education, Photograph magazine, Tipping Point in ETC Magazine. Leta 2020 je bila rezidentka Tranzit/Erste v MuseumsQuartier na Dunaju, rezidenčna kuratorka v galeriji Futura v Pragi, leta 2023 pa rezidentka v Forum Stadtpark v Gradcu (Styria AiR). Deluje med Ljubljano in Prago.

Manca G. Renko (PhD) is a historian, currently working at the ERC Eirene project at Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. Her research focus are women in afterwar transitions, especially after WWI and WWII. She is interested in intellectual and emotional history as well as in theory of history with a special emphasis on pop culture. She is also editor-in-chief of CUKR, bi-annual magazine on arts and culture, published by MGML (The Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana).

Dr. Manca G. Renko je zgodovinarka, trenutno zaposlena na projektu ERC Eirene na Filozofski fakulteti Univerze v Ljubljani. Njeno raziskovalno področje so ženske v povojnih tranzicijah, zlasti po prvi in drugi svetovni vojni. Zanima jo intelektualna in emocionalna zgodovina ter teorija zgodovine s posebnim poudarkom na popkulturi. Je tudi glavna urednica CUKR-a, polletne revije o umetnosti in kulturi, ki jo izdaja MGML (Muzej in galerije mesta Ljubljane).
