Space for Work: The (In)accessibility of Studios
Prostor dela: (Ne)dostopnost ateljejev
To speak of the studio is to speak of the space where all artistic production begins. It is the space where the artist's idea first materialises. The ambition of the artist's idea, the dimensions of the piece and the physical manifestation of the work all depend on the right working space. But in times when property prices are skyrocketing, a (suitable) working space is only accessible to a few. Artists are forced to organise and network themselves; some give up their art practice altogether, or – at best – limit production in one way or another. The Municipality of Ljubljana rents out space units of just over 17,000 m² free of charge for artistic creation and the work of non-government organisations within the cultural sphere. How and to whom are the studios accessible? To what extent are they used and how are the calls for applications determined? What about the availability of spaces for the needs of artistic production elsewhere? What examples of good practice are there and where is there room for (much-needed) improvement?
Govoriti o ateljejih pomeni govoriti o prostorih, kjer se vsa umetniška produkcija začne; to so prostori, kjer se zgodi prva materializacija umetnikove ideje. Od ustreznega delovnega prostora je lahko odvisna ambicioznost umetnikove zamisli, dimenzije njegovega dela in končna uresničitev. Pa vendar je v času visokih cen nepremičnin (primeren) delovni prostor dostopen le malokomu. Umetniki so se prisiljeni samoorganizirati in povezovati, nekateri opuščajo umetniško prakso ali - v najboljšem primeru – tako ali drugače krčijo produkcijo. Mestna občina Ljubljana za namen umetniške ustvarjalnosti in delovanja nevladnih organizacij s področja kulture brezplačno oddaja prostorskih enot v izmeri nekaj več kot 17.000 m². Na kakšen način in komu so dostopni ateljeji? Koliko so koriščeni in kako so zastavljeni razpisni pogoji? Kako je z dostopnostjo prostorov za potrebe umetniške produkcije v drugih krajih? Kaj so primeri dobre prakse in kje je prostor za (nujno potrebne) izboljšave?

Mateja Demšič is a historian and holds an MSc in Historical Anthropology. She has been the Head of the Department of Culture of the City of Ljubljana since 2013. During her term, Ljubljana was named the UNESCO City of Literature, two strategic documents on cultural policy were adopted and a number of investments were made in public cultural infrastructure, including the Plečnik House, Villa Zlatica, Švicarija as a studio space and the Cukrarna Gallery.
Mateja Demšič je zgodovinarka in magistrica historične antropologije. Od leta 2013 je vodja Oddelka za kulturo Mestne občine Ljubljana. V času njenega mandata je bila Ljubljana imenovana za Unescovo mesto literature, sprejeta sta bila dva strateška dokumenta na področju kulturne politike, izvedene so bile številne investicije v javno kulturno infrastrukturo, med njimi Plečnikova hiša, Vila Zlatica, umetniški ateljeji v Švicariji in Galerija Cukrarna.
Saša Nabergoj graduated in Art History from the University of Ljubljana and has been the director of the Škofja Loka Museum since 2015. She is a member of the Slovenian Museum Association (SMD), the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the International Association of Art Critics (AICA) and the International Association of Curators of Contemporary Art Curators (IKT), and works as a curator, writer, editor and lecturer in the field of contemporary art with a focus on museum, curatorial and critical practices.
Saša Nabergoj je končala študij umetnostne zgodovine na Univerzi v Ljubljani in je od leta 2015 direktorica Muzeja Škofja Loka. Je članica Slovenskega muzejskega društva (SMD), Mednarodnega muzejskega sveta (ICOM), Mednarodnega združenja umetnostnih kritikov (AICA) in Mednarodnega združenja kustosov sodobne umetnosti (IKT) ter deluje kot kustosinja, piska, urednica in predavateljica na področju sodobne umetnosti s poudarkom na muzejskih, kuratorskih in kritiških praksah.
Tanja Lažetić works in photography, video, performance, ceramics and artists' books. Her work has been shown in exhibitions at Moderna galerija, the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein in Berlin, Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, Museum Brandhorst in Munich, Gagosian Gallery in Paris, Beverly Hills and New York, and many others. She has received numerous accolades including a bronze prize at the Nanjing International Art Festival in China, a third prize at the International Ceramics Triennial Unicum in Ljubljana and the Rihard Jakopič Prize. In ten years, Tanja Lažetić has published over twenty works. Her photobooks are part of the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New Your, the Tate in London and the Bibliothèque Kandinsky in Paris. She lives and works in Ljubljana.
Tanja Lažetić deluje na področjih fotografije, videa, performansa, keramike in knjige umetnika. Razstavljala je med drugim v Moderni galeriji, v Muzeju sodobne umetnosti Metelkova, v Neuer Berliner Kunstvereinu v Berlinu, v Real Academii de Bellas Artes de San Fernando v Madridu, v Muzeju Brandhorst v Münchnu, Gagosian Gallery v Parizu, Beverly Hillsu in New Yorku in drugje. Leta 2015 je prejela bronasto nagrado na festivalu v Nanjingu na Kitajskem in tretjo nagrado na mednarodnem keramičnem trienalu UNICUM v Ljubljani, leta 2016 pa Jakopičevo priznanje. V zadnjih desetih letih je Lažetić objavila več kot dvajset umetniških knjig. Njene knjige so vključene tudi v zbirki MoMA Artists’ Books Collection, Tate Collection of Artists’ Books in Bibliothèque Kandinsky v Parizu. Živi in dela v Ljubljani.
Andrej Škufca is a contemporary artist who works with object technologies. He has had solo exhibitions at Aksioma Gallery in Ljubljana, International Centre of Graphic Arts Centre in Ljubljana, Miroslav Kraljević Gallery in Zagreb, Karlin Studios, FUTURA in Prague and DUM Project Space in Ljubljana. He has participated in group exhibitions at Het Niewe Institut in Rotterdam, National Museum of 21st Century Art MAXXI in Rome, Ludwig Museum in Budapest, Centre for Contemporary Art in Podgorica, Nitja Centre for Contemporary Art in Oslo, Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova and Moderna galerija in Ljubljana. He is also co-editor of Šum magazine.
Andrej Škufca je sodobni umetnik, ki se ukvarja z objektnimi tehnologijami. Samostojno je razstavljal v Galeriji Aksioma v Ljubljani, Mednarodnem grafičnem likovnem centru v Ljubljani, Galeriji Miroslava Kraljevića v Zagrebu, Karlin Studios, FUTURA v Pragi in DUM projektnem prostoru v Ljubljani. Sodeloval je na skupinskih razstavah v Het Niewe Institut v Rotterdamu, Nacionalnem muzeju umetnosti 21. stoletja MAXXI v Rimu, Muzeju Ludwig v Budimpešti, Centru za sodobno umetnost v Podgorici, Centru za sodobno umetnost Nitja v Oslu, Muzeju sodobne umetnosti Metelkova in Moderni galeriji v Ljubljani. Je tudi sourednik revije Šum.
Stojan Pelko holds a Master's degree in Philosophy, a PhD in Sociology, is a communications consultant and film publicist. He is the author of several books on film theory and numerous articles in journals and film magazines, and was also the editor of Ekran magazine. In 2000 he founded Korpus, a communications consultancy specialising in political marketing. From 2008 to 2011 he was State Secretary at the Ministry of Culture. During this time, he creatively led the preparations for Slovenia's appearance at EXPU 2010 in Shanghai. From 2012 to 2015, he was a spokesperson and communications advisor for the EU Office in Kosovo, and from September 2015 to March 2016, he coordinated Dubrovnik's candidacy for the European Capital of Culture 2020. Since November 2022, he has been the Programme Manager of the European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica - Gorizia.
Stojan Pelko je magister filozofije, doktor socioloških znanosti, komunikacijski svetovalec in filmski publicist. Je avtor več knjig s področja filmske teorije in številnih člankov v zbornikih in filmskih revijah, bil pa je tudi urednik revije Ekran. Leta 2000 je ustanovil družbo za komunikacijsko svetovanje Korpus, specializirano za politični marketing. Med letoma 2008 in 2011 je bil državni sekretar na Ministrstvo za kulturo. V tem času je kreativno vodil priprave na nastop Slovenije na EXPU 2010 v Šanghaju. Leta 2012 je bil član ekipe evropskih ustvarjalcev in voditeljev na področju kulture Culture Team 2012. Med letoma 2012 in 2015 je bil govorec in komunikacijski svetovalec Urada EU na Kosovu, od septembra 2015 do marca 2016 je koordiniral kandidaturo Dubrovnika za Evropsko prestolnico kulture 2020. Od novembra 2022 je programski vodja Evropske prestolnice kulture 2025 Nova Gorica - Gorica.
