Metka Krašovec: THE RED PERIOD, THE SECOND CYCLE 0.2

Solo exhibition
Curated by: Arne Brejc
15/04–05/06/2025

Academic painter Metka Krašovec has dedicated her life to fine art. In 46 years, she has created an extensive and recognizable oeuvre that is serious, personal, and metaphysical. She comes from the established generation of the "young circle of expressive figurative art", which first presented itself publicly in 1968 at exhibitions in Belgrade and Ljubljana. Since then, her painting has been tied to the magical experience of objects immersed in a warm, dense field of color (e.g. the famous Franciscan Church, 1970), which in turn establish a special psychological mood. Seemingly familiar things, objects, or locations, captured in their recognizable qualities, as things, things, find themselves in alienated mise-en-scènes, in an optical metaphysics of timeless duration.

In later illusionistic interiors (Postelja I, 1973, and the works that followed), only the seemingly warm light of an intimate interior and the cold light of a hospital alternate. In the plastic outline of seemingly irrelevant objects, memory and pain at the loss of a loved one live; existential feelings of death and foreignness have entered the paintings. On the outside, these are highly artistically urbanized paintings, exquisitely composed and somehow cold, distant, but never passive: their restraint is nevertheless eloquent and binding. The exhibition will exclusively present her RED PERIOD (1970 – 1979), her second creative cycle, with which she established herself as a painter and began to build her own poetics and iconography, forever imprinting herself in Slovenian memory.
